Artificial intelligence is reshaping the workforce at breakneck speed, automating tasks from data entry to customer service and even creative work. Concern is widespread. According to a new Pew Research Center survey, 52% of workers worry about the impact of AI on the workplace, and nearly a third (32%) believe it will lead to fewer job opportunities for them in the long run. Yet while these concerns are valid, certain AI-resistant careers remain insulated from automation’s reach.
A new AI-Resistant Careers Index from Resume Now identifies the 20 high-paying jobs least likely to be replaced by automation, based on data from the U.S. Department of Labor’s O*NET database and Payscale salary information. The index measures three critical human skills: adaptability, stress tolerance and self-control. Only positions scoring 74 or higher in all three categories and offering median salaries of at least $74,000 made the cut.
What emerges is a clear picture of where human expertise remains irreplaceable.
1. Nurse Anesthetists
With an AI-Resistant Index of 93.3 and a median annual salary of $195,263, nurse anesthetists top the list of careers most insulated from automation. These specialized nurses administer anesthesia and monitor patients during surgical procedures, requiring split-second decision-making when patients experience unexpected reactions, constant vigilance throughout procedures and the ability to remain calm when complications arise. AI can assist with monitoring vital signs, but cannot replace the nuanced judgment required when a patient’s condition suddenly changes.
2. Emergency Physicians
